15 Time related idioms

Time, time, time! We will never have enough of it. If we got a dollar everytime we say " i don't have time for a thing/person" we would probably be rich now. πŸ™‚

So anyway, as the word "time" is often used on our daily basis I thought of looking up for some  idioms that I could add to my vocabulary. Read the list and let me know if any of them sounds familiar to you. And then, I challenge you to pick 2-3 idioms and to make up some sentences.


 

1.  From time to time = Occasionally, once in a while;

Example: I like reading since-fiction a lot, however from time to time I read a romantic novel.

2.  Time flies = time passes quickly;

Example: Time flies when you do what you like!

3. The third time is a charm = if someone has failed twice in doing something perhaps he will succede the 3rd time;

Example: My brother got his driving license after his third try. I guess the third time is a charm.

4. Better late than never = It is better to do something after the expected time than not doing it at all;

Example: It took Sarah four years to graduate, but better late than never, right?

5. A Devil of time = a difficult or frustrating time;

Example: We had the Devil of a time convincing my mother to come live with us.

6. A race against time = a situation in which something must be done quickly because little time is available; a race = a competition.


Example: They had to race against time to find a new apartment before the old one was sold.

7. All the time in the world = a large amount of time available;

These application form is due in May. You have all the time in the world to complete it.

8. At all times = always, without stopping; 

Example: The children should be supervised at all times. 

9. Bad time = not the right moment; 

   Good time = happy occasions, enjoyable moments;

Example: Am I calling at a bad time? Do you have a minute? 

This is Giorgia, my school friend. We have shared so many good times together.

10. Buy time= to delay something in order to gain more time;

Example:  The dinner was not ready yet, so she was  trying to buy some time by telling her guests a long story.

11. To have a hard time = to experience difficulty while doing something;

Example: The school has had a hard time recruiting substitute teachers. 

12. On time = punctual, punctually;

Example: Her students always arrive on time. 

13. The time of (one's) life=  to have a lot of fun;

Example: We had the time of our life at your party! 

14. Time is money = time is a valuable resource and it is better to do things as quickly as possibile;

Example: They know that time is money so they try not to waste it on insignificant things. 


15. In due time = at an appropriate time; 

Example: The fire fighters  reached the burning building on due time.
